What causes pipes to burst?

Pipes can burst for a number of reasons. Some of the most common causes include:

  • Freezing Temperatures – When the temperatures drop below freezing if your property is not heated properly, your water pipes can freeze and burst causing your pipes to expand and eventually burst.
  • Older pipes – Pipes made with  he sub-par materials rot away over time and if you live in an older home with the original piping, theage of your pipes can cause pipes to burst.
  • Hard water buildup – Hard water build up and scale can cause serious issues with your plumbing. Continuous mineral buildup results in a continual deterioration of your pipes and eventually  becomes severe enough to cause damage in your plumbing.
  • Faulty Pipes  – Pipes made of Polybutylene can burst without any warning. Many homes built between 1978 & 1995 were made of this material and contain thinner walls which oxidize from common minerals and chlorine typically found in most tap water.
  • Invasive roots – Tree roots are one of the most common issues affecting your home’s plumbing. Many older trees have large deep roots which search for water over time. In their search for water, they may grow into pipe opens and break the pipe causing sever damage.

Regardless of the cause of a burst pipe, treating the problem immediately can prevent serious damage from spreading throughout your home or office. Ability Plumbing is here to provide you with fast response times to come out and take care of your emergency issues at all hours of the day.

How can you prevent pipes from bursting?

There’s an old saying that says, “An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.”  That being said, there are a few things you can do to prevent this from happening in your home or office. Thus, when going away out of town for winter, it’s always recommended to keep your heat on a low temperature to prevent pipes form freezing. Additionally, you may set your faucets to a slow drip to create a constant trickle flowing through your pipes. This helps prevent further freezing from happening.

In areas of  draft or severe temperatures, it is a good idea to put insulation or pipe sleeves around exposed pipes in areas like your basement  or attic where pipes are close to exterior walls. Another good tips is to avoid planting trees that may grow with deep roots near pipelines in your home. By simply taking these steps, you can prevent most pipes from breaking and secure your home our office.

You may also prevent further problems by having regular plumbing maintenance. Properly maintaining your pipes can help you avoid many of these problems from happening. If you would like an inspection of your pipes, give us a call, we are here to serve you!
